Review: Rocky Talkie Mountain Radios

Updated: Feb 22

Rocky Talkie Mountain Radios Are A Must Have For Any Outdoor Enthusiast.

If you are a person that likes to do anything outdoors the Rocky Talkie Mountain Radios are something you are going to want to have in your gear boxes. Skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, fishing, hiking, backpacking, climbing and pretty much anything where you might need to chat with another person, the Rocky Talkies are going to come in clutch. There have been many times in the backcountry where I've needed to communicate with someone with me and haven't had cell service or the people I was with didn't have cell service. Sometimes that need for communicating with someone in your group could mean you just want them to bring you a beer from the cooler back at camp or it might be a life or death situation. Either way, staying in touch with your friends in the mountains or desert comes in handy and I've found the Rocky Talkie's do a pretty damn good job.

Description

The Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio is an award winning license-free radio designed and tested in the Colorado Rockies. Created with climbers and skiers in mind, the compact radio is suited for any rugged adventure where communication is critical.

A specialized lithium-ion battery provides over 4 days of battery life, even in very cold conditions (-20°F). For enhanced durability, the radio has a shatterproof LED screen and thermoplastic protective covering. Unlike the fragile plastic clips of other radios, the Mountain Radio easily secures to backpacks and harnesses using an ultra-light carabiner and back-up leash.

The radio transmits the maximum power legally allowed for use without a license (2-watts). The max range is over 35 miles, however, 1 to 5 miles is more typical in backcountry terrain. For more info on range, please see Rocky Talkies range testing video or blog post. The Mountain Radio is ready to use out of the box and requires zero configuration. The electronics are simple and reliable - the radio has 5 buttons that are easy to understand while still supporting the critical advanced features (such as privacy codes to prevent outside interference).Compatible with Rocky Talkies Waterproof Hand Mic! Using The Rocky Talkies

Snow-covered mountain under a blue sky with scattered clouds. Foreground has frosty pine trees. Serene and cold winter landscape.

During our testing of the Rocky Talkies Mountain Radios we have experienced nothing but positive results every time. The batteries have been great and I have used them on multiple mountain bike rides and split boarding trips in a row without charging. I have yet to use them until the batteries have died on me while using them. As far as range goes I have never been more than a mile away from those I have been using them with so I can't say that I have reached their max range at all during testing. Although, I can't see myself in any type of situation where I might exceed those max ranges. Typically I would always be within at least a mile of those who are with me. I plan on using these a lot more in the upcoming months and will have a long term review coming up on these.

The Rocky Talkies feel super well made and none of the parts feel cheap or easily breakable at all. They have a super nice feel to them while holding them and aren't too big or small in your hand. I also found these radios super easy to use. The buttons are very intuitive and are very simple making them easy for kids and the older generations to use. If you find yourself needing a more powerful radio they do offer a 5 watt version as well.
