My Thoughts On The Axial SCX24 Lexus GX 470 4X4 RTR Brushed Rock Crawler From Horizon Hobby
When the snow isn't snowy and we aren't snowboarding or if the dirts not cooperating for riding mountain bikes, me and my kids have been getting into 24 scale rock crawler RC trucks. They are super fun and inexpensive to get into. These little trucks are great indoors and outdoors. We take these things hiking and camping and we have even started building little courses in the basement and backyard. I started my addiction with an Axial SCX24 Chevy C10 truck that I have slowly built up and customized with upgraded motor, servo, suspension, and weighted wheels and other weighted parts.
In this review I will be going over the Axial SCX24 Lexus GX 470.

I love this little truck. It's super realistic and built pretty close to scale. I am wanting to keep this one pretty close to stock as far as tire/wheel size and ride height. Sure, I won't be able to climb over and get up some stuff my heavily upgraded trucks will, but with this one I don't think that's really the point. I want the smaller obstacles that are more to scale for this truck to still be a challenge on this one.
As it sits now here is a brief overview according to Axial... "With a capable suspension and powerful V8 engine, the Lexus GX has become a popular choice for off-roading and overlanding. No surprise, then, that RC crawling enthusiasts are eager to hit the trails with their own version of this SUV-turned-adventure machine — or that Axial is ready to answer the call with the SCX24 Lexus GX 470 RTR.
The GX 470 brings even more variety to the SCX24 line of crawlers, and Axial made no compromises in order to reproduce it in 1/24 scale. RC crawling fans of all experience levels will appreciate its features, performance, and realistic detail. Fully equipped, fully assembled, and affordably priced, the GX 470 is an easy addition to any 1/24 scale RC collection.
In RC just as in full scale, the appeal of overlanding has less to do with the destination than the experiences you have while getting there. Indoors or out, the GX 470 loves adventure. If your journey takes you through a little mud or up a rocky trail, this rig is ready for the challenge.
After all, no Axial crawler is built just for show. The GX 470 features steel C-channel frame rails, steel front and rear axles, and steel dogbones for the strength to tackle tough climbs and rough trails. Powered by an 88-turn brushed motor, the full-time 4-wheel drivetrain spins on sealed cartridge bearings and uses a worm screw and worm gear setup in the differentials to boost ground clearance. The 4-link rear suspension reduces axle steer and torque twist, and oil-filled shocks provide a smooth, plush ride. It packs big-time performance into a 1/24 scale package.
With its officially licensed, extra-durable ABS hard body, the GX 470 matches that performance with an exceptional amount of scale realism. The body comes factory-finished in white, silver, or black, and is topped off with scale accessories and working lights. Officially licensed Black Rhino Raid wheels and Nitto Trail Grappler M/T tires complete the picture while boosting the rig’s capability to conquer a wide range of surfaces.
High-quality accessories round out this 100% ready-to-run package. Adjustments on the Spektrum SLT2 2.4GHz transmitter let you fine-tune steering control to suit your personal preferences. On a full charge, the Spektrum 350mAh LiPo battery provides 30+ minutes of uninterrupted run time. Recharging is quick and convenient using the Spektrum USB-C LiPo charger. Axial even includes the four AA batteries you’ll need for the transmitter."

Driving The Lexus GX 470
This 24 scale Lexus does pretty well in its stock form. The motor has plenty of power to get through anything that it's capable of doing. The servo is good and has enough power as well and is quite responsive. I like the transmitter too. It has really good throttle and steering response and has 3 levels of power adjustment and steering adjustment also. The Nitto tires on this rig have some decent grip and it does well on variable terrain with a mix of dirt and rock. However there are some stickier options out there if you want to look at some other tires.

The way it sits in stock configuration, I would say they truck does really well and you can definitely have some fun straightaway out of the box. With all of these stock 24 scale trucks though, the biggest thing you can do to make them better immediately is adding some weight like with these brass hubs. For the most part this does a great job of giving these trucks the ability to climb and sidehill steeper obstacles without tipping over. Once you add enough weight however you will most likely want to upgrade the motor and servos to something with a bit more power. These little truck are pretty durable too and can take quite a beating. I don't recommend driving them off anything larger than a couple feet to flat or driving them through deep water but they will take a roll over or flip and keep on going. The nice thing about these things is the parts are pretty cheap and easy to replace. Pick up this Lexus or any other 24 scale crawler or other cars or trucks at Horizon Hobby.
